Any medical problem that happens during a study, whether or not the treatment caused it.

What it means
An adverse event is any unfavourable medical occurrence in a participant during a study. Importantly, it is recorded whether or not it is believed to be related to the treatment.
Why it matters if you take part
Because everything is recorded regardless of cause, adverse event lists include things that had nothing to do with the treatment. That is deliberate — it avoids filtering by assumption.
